Mountains of Treats
By Peyton Schultze
At the Disneyland Resort, there is never a shortage of awesome food options for all ages to enjoy. Many have probably tried some of the more popular selections at the resort, such as the spectacular Dole Whip served up in Adventureland or the select carts throughout the resort selling warm and delicious churros. Yet there are so many choices for eats and treats to be found at every corner of the resort that simply just add even more of a magical experience to those traveling to the Anaheim theme park. Here’s our list of some of the most underrated and little-known food options found all over the resort.
Churro Funnel Cake, Hungry Bear Restaurant
In the back left corner of Disneyland over by Splash Mountain, guests can visit the Hungry Bear Restaurant for one of the best and little-known sweets throughout the resort. The concept is simple; an original funnel cake that tastes like one of Disney’s iconic churros with Mickey-shaped whip cream on top (caramel drizzled across is also an option). Yet the combination works so well with the above ingredients, and the cake can ultimately serve up from 2-4 people for only $7.99. The Churro Funnel Cake is a hidden food gem in Disneyland that is sure to be a major hit for dessert on your next trip to the resort.
Monte Cristo Sandwich, Café Orleans
At one of Disneyland’s best table-service restaurants in New Orleans Square, guests can find the awesome Monte Cristo Sandwich. For $21.00, guests order two full sandwiches fried in light batter and split in half, featuring a great mix of sliced ham, turkey, and swiss. To finish it off, the sandwich is dusted with Royal Colored Sugar and is served with maple syrup, jam, and a fruit mix on the side. In addition, guests could also order the three-cheese Monte Cristo from Café Orleans, which includes swiss, mozzarella, and double crème brie. This sandwich is one of the most filling and expensive food items throughout the resort, but is well worth the heavy price tag with its great taste.
Sourdough Bacon-Cheese Melt, Carnation Café
One of the finest burger options throughout the resort is definitely the Sourdough Bacon-Cheese Melt found at Carnation Café on Main Street U.S.A. Although reservations are often needed for one of Disney’s iconic restaurant, the food is delicious and well-worth any long wait. Yet the Sourdough Melt stands out among the rest. With a fresh patty, pepper jack cheese, grilled onions, hickory-smoked bacon, and a spicy house sauce, the Sourdough Melt is a great meal on any Disneyland trip. It’s even a bit spicy, and is certainly a major hit on Carnation’s solid menu.
Matterhorn Macaroon, Jolly Holiday Bakery
Modeled off Disney’s largest and snow-capped mountain, the Matterhorn Macaroon is a delicious treat at the Jolly Holiday Bakery. A coconut macaroon covered in white chocolate to model the snow of the Matterhorn, this item is a delicious and cheap option at Disneyland’s splendid bakery. Although it lacks the elaborateness of other desserts and sweets around the resort, this baked good hits just the right spot at the beginning of a long and exciting day at Disneyland. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise; it’s a jolly holiday with the Matterhorn Macaroon at Disneyland Park.
Mickey Beignets, Mint Julep Bar
Among our list, this is probably the most well-known due to its awesome taste. Located in New Orleans Square close to the Haunted Mansion, the Mint Julep Bar sells Mickey-shaped beignets that are as delicious as they sound. In addition, during the holiday season, the beignets also are peppermint-flavored for a select time and are truly a delight. Unfortunately, they only come with three total beignets and park guests will quickly find themselves hungry for another one. However, that should not stop anyone from trying this great treat. Top it off with a nearby non-alcoholic Mint Julep and sit on a nearby bench and guests will find a lot of joy in their snack in one of the more quiet areas of the park.
Pommes Frites, Café Orleans
Another great food option at Disneyland Park is also located in New Orleans Square at Café Orleans. As a sharable appetizer for families and couples alike, the Pommes Frites are exceptional fries tossed together with parmesan, garlic and parley in one awesome blend of flavor. In addition, make sure to dip into the Cajun Spice Rémoulade on the side for a spicy dip. The Pommes Frites are one of Disneyland’s best food options that should be a must for guests looking for an appetizer on their next stop at Café Orleans.
Mac N’ Cheese Bread Bowl, Pacific Wharf Café
Although this item is not on the menu and is a “secret menu” item, the Mac N’ Cheese Bread Bowl is a delicious entrée that will have guests’ mouths watering. It’s a simple food; ton of mac n’ cheese stuffed into one of Pacific Wharf’s awesome sourdough bread bowls that is purely great. With that being said, guests can also order clam chowder in a break bowl from Pacific Wharf Café if they choose to pass on the mac n’ cheese. It only serves about 1-2 people, but this awesome bread bowl is one of the best and lowkey food options at Disney’s California Adventure.
Pixar Pier Frosty Parfait, Adorable Snowman Frosted Treats
A somewhat new dessert at Disney’s California Adventure, the Pixar Pier Frosty Parfait is a cold and delicious treat for all ages. In a vertical cup, guests receive a large amount of non-dairy lemon soft serve and blue raspberry swirl with a cherry on top that is sure to. Based off the treats that the Abominable Snowman from Monsters Inc. makes, this awesome dessert is perfect for a warm, summer day at the still-new Pixar Pier at Disney’s California Adventure for only $5.99.
Hand-Dipped Ice Cream Bar, Clarabelle’s Hand-Scooped Ice Cream
Although the ice cream options at the Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor or The Golden Horseshoe may be more popular, the hand-dipped ice cream bars at Clarabelle’s are just as great as any other top treat throughout the resort. For $5.69, guests can choose between a “Mickey” or “Minnie” type of vanilla bar that is hand-dipped in a choice of chocolate coating and sprinkles. This old-school dessert is one of Disney’s best that is a great way to cap off any night throughout the resort.
Red’s Apple Freeze, Cozy Cone Motel
Although there are several other awesome snack options available at all of the Cozy Cone Motel booths, Red’s Apple Freeze is a chilly drink that is sure to cool you off on a warm California day. For $5.49, guests order a frozen drink that tastes like just apple juice and has a great-tasting foam on the top. While the drink goes by quick due to its delicious taste, this drink is a great option during the summer as guests pass through Radiator Springs at Disney’s California Adventure.
